U.S. equity futures surged Tuesday morning as traders weighed the next phase of U.S.-China trade tensions.

E-mini Dow Jones Industrial Average Index Futures (CBOT: YMW00) jumped 1,023 points, or 2.68%, to 39,188.00 as of 7:56 a.m. Central Time.

The move comes ahead of a critical deadline, with former President Donald Trump threatening to impose an additional 50% tariff on Chinese imports unless Beijing reverses its latest round of retaliatory measures.

Futures Snapshot

  • Current Price: 39,188.00

  • Open: 38,486.00

  • High: 39,392.00

  • Low: 38,432.00

  • Previous Close: 38,165.00

  • Open Interest: 76,549

Tariff Pressure Builds

The current escalation stems from a series of rapid developments:

  • April 2: Trump declared a national emergency over trade imbalances, imposing a 10% universal tariff on all imports, along with a 34% tariff on Chinese goods.

  • April 4: China announced 34% retaliatory tariffs on U.S. exports, effective April 10.

  • April 7: Trump responded by threatening an additional 50% tariff on Chinese imports if Beijing does not stand down by April 8.

China has rejected U.S. demands, labelling the tariff threats as economic coercion and vowing to respond in kind if further measures are enacted.

Markets Reposition

Despite the geopolitical uncertainty, futures markets remain firmly in positive territory. Traders appear to be positioning around the likelihood of new industrial policy, reshoring incentives, and a potential realignment of global supply chains.

The strength in futures volume and the size of the move suggest broad risk-on sentiment, with capital rotating toward assets tied to domestic infrastructure, defence, and energy resilience.
