BREAKING NEWS
Reports this week suggest Russia has approached Indonesia with a request to base long-range military aircraft at Manuhua Air Force Base in Biak, Papua — a strategic location just 1,300 kilometers from northern Australia.
The Indonesian government has rejected the story outright.
Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin called the reports “simply not true,” reiterating Indonesia’s long-standing position against allowing foreign military bases on its territory.
Australia responded swiftly to the claims, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese voicing concern and seeking clarification from Jakarta.
Defense Minister Richard Marles confirmed that discussions with Indonesia have taken place, noting the importance of maintaining regional balance.
Indonesia has maintained a non-aligned foreign policy for decades, but recent developments — including joint naval exercises with Russia and participation in the BRICS group — have led some analysts to re-evaluate its strategic direction.
For now, the official stance is clear: there is no agreement with Russia.
But the fact that such a proposal is even being discussed highlights shifting dynamics in the Indo-Pacific.
